Prathamastami -

Prathamastami is not only a fest, but a feeling to all Odia families. It is that day when the eldest child, who is normally accused of everything including breaking TV remote, not been able to finish the last biscuit, etc, gets all the love, blessings, and respect that he/she actually deserves. This festival is celebrated on Ashtami tithi of Krishna Paksha on Margashirsha and it is a wonderful sign of the Odishi warmth and the importance it gives to family relations. Prathamastami is a festival that is devoted to the well-being, long life, prosperity and safety of the first child (son or daughter) in the family and thus, it is one of the most significant family-oriented festivals in the state.

The Odia belief that the oldest child is not a mere sibling in the family but a stabilizing element is also notable in this festival. Historically, the first born is viewed as the one who has the duties to shoulder, the second parent to the younger children, and even informal parental referee. Prathamastami understands this role with love, ceremonial, and last but not least, Enduri Pitha the star of the festival.

The ceremonies begin very early in the morning, and mothers do the puja, diya lighting, prayers to Lord Ganesha and goddess Shasthi, and rub the eldest child with turmeric paste (which is a rare occasion when children are happy to have yellow colour pasted on their face). The smell of the turmeric leaves being cooked in the kitchen remind about the festive character, which is specifically tied to Prathamastami.

The simplicity of the festival is even more beautiful, as there is not much flashy ornament, no costly installations, no pressure. Nothing but family, food, tradition and the sweet smell of Odia culture in the house.
